Update (Oct.2, 2007): Microsoft wins Kayak Prize 2007.
I’m rather astonished. I really didn’t think we had a chance of stopping it. And we haven’t, but this is a huge step in the right direction. There will be many deserved thanks and congratulations going out to all who helped raise awareness of what’s at stake, so I won’t add more to that here.
Instead, I will give a big public thanks to Microsoft. Microsoft, thank you very much for trying to buy the Swedish vote on OOXML. Your corrupt action was outed resulting in a backlash of immense proportion. We all deeply appreciate the fact that you pushed a little too hard. Without your determined focus to maximize profit for your shareholders regardless of externalities, we may not have been able to do it. With a little less aggression, you just may have managed to push your broken “standard” through ISO thus helping your cause. We can’t thank you enough. Keep up the “good” work.

If true, this is only mildly good news. Microsoft will not back off. They will continue to do everything they can think of to get their way with this. Expect more packing of committees, threats, bribes, dirty tricks, and more. It might be possible to block them, but I doubt it because it will be very hard to keep up enough public attention on this for as long as the subsequent process will take. I hope I’m wrong. I’ll admit that I thought Microsoft would win this first round and it appears they did not. Perhaps we will be able to block them, but it will only get harder from here on.

Unfortunately, I can’t disagree with you at all.
